International students studying in Sri Lanka on a student visa may require a guardian if they are under 18 years of age. There may also be exceptional circumstances where a student over 18 years of age may need a guardian for religious or cultural reasons. The Guardian can live in Sri Lanka for the same length of time as the student for whom you are guardian, or until the student turns 18 years of age. The Student Guardian visa is for foreign nationals applying to stay in Sri Lanka as the guardian of a student who is studying in Sri Lanka. You can lodge your application for a student guardian visa at the same time that the student lodges their student visa application, or after the student arrives in Sri Lanka.
There is three -step application procedure:
- Obtaining Entry visa approval from the Department of Immigration in Colombo
- Collecting Entry Visa endorsement from the nearest Sri Lanka Diplomatic mission and travel to Sri Lanka
- After arrival in Sri Lanka, collect employment visa endorsement on passport at the Department of Immigration in Colombo
Steps to follow:
- Guardian should first have to secure placement for student in a recognized school in Sri Lanka
- Application for entry visa approval for Guardian should be launched at the Department of Immigration
- The Department of Immigration notify the nearest Sri Lanka Diplomatic Mission of the entry visa approval
- Guardian reports to the nearest Sri Lanka Diplomatic Mission to obtains the Entry Visa endorsed on the passport
- Guardian arrives in Sri Lanka (together with student and student must have student visa)
- At the port of entry, immigration may grant entry for specified period.
- Upon entering Sri Lanka, before the expiry of the visa given at the port of entry, the passport of the Guardian should be referred to the Department of Immigration for stamping Guardian visa on it.
- Completed visa application form
- Letter from the school confirming the admission of student
- Copy of the data page of the Guardian’s passport
- Documentary proof of financial capability of the guardian to remit USD 1500.00 per month to cover living expenses in Sri Lanka
