About Retirement Visa

'My Dream Home' programme is promoted by the Government of Sri Lanka to allow people from all over the world, who fulfill a certain criteria to retire in Sri Lanka. It allows the retiree to live in the country under a long term resident visa, issued in two year blocks.

 

It is open to citizens of countries recognized by Sri Lanka regardless of race, religion or gender. This program allows applicants to bring their spouses, and children who are unmarried and below the age of 18 with them. It is the perfect visa for foreign citizens to enjoy a long-term stay in Sri Lanka. My Dream Home Program is initiated, organized and launched by the Sri Lankan Government and is thus one that the Government will continuously seek to improve, to ensure its success and is committed to making your life in Sri Lanka an enjoyable one.

Eligibility

  • Foreign national over 55 years of age
  • Should deposit US$ 15,000 or the equivalent in an approved foreign currency in a fixed deposit account in an approved bank in Sri Lanka.
  • Monthly remittance of US$ 1,500 or the equivalent in an approved foreign currency for the principal applicant and US$ 750 or the equivalent in an approved foreign currency for each dependent, for their upkeep in a savings or current account in an approved bank in Sri Lanka. 
  • Dependents as children should be under the age of 18 and unmarried.
Application Procedure

The applications are processed only at the Department of Immigration Emigration in Colombo.

  • Foreign nationals planning to apply for this retirement visa may enter the country by applying for a 30 day tourist visa through the ETA service (online visa).
  • After arrival, an application can be lodged with us to be processed at the Department of Immigration, who will notify the applicant of their decision in writing two weeks after submission.
  • Successful applicants will be issued a Provisional Visa Approval Letter (to open up a fixed deposit Foreign Currency account in a bank of his/her choice in Sri Lanka) and an instruction letter to the Bank
  • Applicants should remit the amount to bank and submit the statement confirming the remittance of US$ 15,000 and the US$ 1,500 monthly remittance.
  • The Department of Immigration issues residence visas valid for a period of two years. This is renewable and will be granted to the applicant and dependents once approved.
Document Requirement

  • Residence Visa Form with 01 passport sized photograph.
  • A certified copy of Passport/Travel document (Data page and visas) - certified by the respective Embassy/High Commission/Consulate
  • A certified copy of latest Bank statement / other related financial documents to confirm the financial capability to support stay in Sri Lanka
  • Source of income (Pension/Superannuation) for monthly remittance for US$ 1,500 for the principal applicant and US$ 750 for each dependent.
  • Police clearance certificate from the country of domicile (not later than 06 months)
  • Marriage certificate, if applicable. (Applicant should inform the Controller (Visa) of the Department of Immigration and Emigration of any changes in civil status and personal information)

 

Terms And Conditions Applicable For Retirement Visa

  • Applicant should possess a valid medical insurance policy, which is applicable in Sri Lanka.
  • Applicants under this scheme may withdraw their entire fixed deposit at anytime should they decide to terminate their stay in Sri Lanka. However, they must obtain prior approval from the Controller of Exchange in Sri Lanka through the Controller General of Immigration Emigration to withdraw funds. Interest gained from the fixed deposit can be withdrawn and spent for the applicant's upkeep.
  • Should submit a police clearance certificate from the country of domicile.
    For renewals, a police clearance certificate from Sri Lanka will suffice.
  • Applicant should not get involved in any type of political activities in Sri Lanka. They should not participate in any activities that can be considered as sensitive to the local people and a threat to the security of the country.
  • Any type of employment is prohibited while staying in Sri Lanka 
  • Retirement visa holders are bound by the rules and regulations of Sri Lanka and are liable to pay relevant taxes. 
  • Applicants are expected to submit half-year's bank statements from the fixed deposit and savings account to the Controller (Visa) of the Department of Immigration Emigration. 
  • Applicants should inform the Controller (Visa) of the Department of Immigration Emigration of any changes in visa status or if personal information is changed.
Fees

Applicable government visa fee and tax for this visa type is Rs 40,000 and US$ 150 respectively.
An additional processing fee will be applied to this.
